Clarity Is the Most Important Creative Tool.

Most projects begin with a spark—a lightbulb moment fueled by creativity and enthusiasm. This is a great place to start, but video production is both creative and strategic. Over the years, we’ve noticed one consistent difference between successful projects with minimal hiccups and those that require extra attention to stay on course: clarity.

It’s not enough to simply make something beautiful. A video needs to be useful for your organization, and without clarity on the who-what-when-where-and-why, your production partner can’t solve the “how” when it comes to making an effective video for your needs. A project without clarity is simply destined to go off the rails.
How to Avoid Derailment
Sometimes, the “spark” that begins a project does not get developed beyond that initial idea, most often due to time constraints. Starting with a complete lack of direction is like traveling without a map—lots of paths look promising, but it’s impossible to know which will lead you where you want to go. Taking time to define what success looks like to you and having clarity around the visual identity, voice, audience, and distribution strategy will get you a better final product.
Other times, you might start with a strong understanding of the “why,” but the target moves mid-production. If the goals change, the approach needs to as well, or else the entire project will be misaligned. Raising money is not the same objective as gaining members or building awareness, and so on. The sooner you can gain clarity around the new direction and adjust your strategy, the better!
While your production team will have guardrails in place to maintain clarity on a project—such as documenting creative feedback, providing structured review phases, and revisiting the creative brief before each milestone—it is truly a team effort. Your production team just doesn’t know what they don’t know, so providing a clear idea with plenty of supporting information helps you both pave the best path forward together. If you aren’t sure about the audience, distribution, or goals for the video, lean on your partnership and work it out together in preproduction. Fewer surprises make for an easier production.
For example, if you know there is someone who needs to have their input considered, make sure you share that information with your production team. Those voices should be included at all major milestones. Waiting until the final stages of a project to include their opinions could cause a revision ripple that requires hours of editing or even additional filming days. Preparing a list of everyone who needs to be included in the major decisions and keeping them in the loop as the project progresses helps maintain clarity throughout.
A Processes Built Around Clarity
Our years of experience have taught us that clarity is integral to the success of any project—from pre- to postproduction and beyond. That’s why we begin our video production process with discovery conversations, connecting with our clients to gain a deep understanding of their organization and the project’s goals. This builds a strong foundation and ensures all team members are on the same page.
From there, we create a project plan that includes the creative strategy and filming logistics. This thorough preproduction process is an opportunity to gain clarity before the cameras start rolling. The fastest way to lose control of the project scope is to capture the wrong footage during your filming day, so it’s vital to make sure everyone is clear about what is being filmed and how it will be used to achieve the organization’s goals.
In postproduction, we have a structured three-step process for reviewing the video: content lock, picture lock, and final approval. Each stage has a defined purpose, helping clients focus their feedback and keep revisions moving efficiently. By maintaining clarity at every step, we ensure that each creative decision ties back to the original “why.”
Clarity doesn’t just happen; it has to be intentionally built and maintained throughout a project. It is the foundation that connects strategy to storytelling and allows for great creative collaboration. When there is clarity around the five Ws of a project, the team can confidently solve for the how and create breathtaking, effective work.
At the end of the day, clarity is the best creative tool.
